The Grand Rapids LipDub
I've never understood why media embraces the idea that naming the worst communities in America is a good idea. Who does that actually help? And, if I lived in one of those towns, I'd probably cancel my subscription. So WTF?
It happened back in 2013 when Forbes called Rockford IL the third most miserable town in America. Because the DMO and its agency, GrahamSpencer, had a deep video library, they were able to respond within days with this killer take-down of the magazine's opinion.
I had forgotten about a similar situation in Grand Rapids in 2011 when Newsweek called the community a "dying city." The community came together and funded a $40,000 effort to defiantly respond with an amazing LipDub, which was a big deal back then. It was the largest LipDub ever with 5,000 Rapidians featured (including Experience Grand Rapids CEO Doug Small at the 6-minute mark).
14 years ago and 6 million views. Is it time for LipDubs like this to make a return?
