THE BOOK

Destination Leadership

Bill has authored two books aimed squarely at the Destination Marketing Organization sector. The first, Destination Leadership for Boards was originally released in 2003 with an update in 2007 and is currently out of print.

Released in 2017, Destination Leadership expands on that first book outlining the why, what and how of place marketing as a strategy for community development and the enhancement of quality of life. This new book goes well beyond Board design and Organizational Structure recommendations (though those topics still remain) to a broader discussion of the imperative of Destination Marketing to community development, sustainability and Quality of Life. Packed with lots of case studies and examples to help demystify the art and science of Destination Leadership, this treatise is a must for anyone in or associated with Destination Marketing Organizations.

I know that Amazon seems like the easiest path to score your copy of Destination Leadership…but they have continually served up resellers that offer the book at various price points and occasionally not in the greatest condition. So, we’ve left the platform.

ORDERING your copy is as simple as sending an email. If you are looking for multiple copies, such as one for each Board Member, we do offer a discount for bulk orders. A single copy is $29.99 and if you order more than 10 copies, that price drops to $19.99 per. Know that, while it can still be found on Amazon, you’ll be purchasing from a third party on that platform and the bulk discount can’t be honored.

“Thank you for writing Destination Leadership. I have read the book at least twice and continue to refer to it all the time. As I was preparing for the (role of) DMO Chair, it was a game changer!”

- Lynn Clark, Disneyland/Visit Anaheim Board member

“You should know that Destination Leadership and the "Do Epic Shit" pin lived at my desk in Whitefish…and they will here too. Certainly taking the pin's mantra to heart at the moment!

- Dylan Boyle , CEO of Bellingham Whatcom Tourism

“Thank you for your insights and wisdom. I have been on my soapbox preaching that DMOs should champion being Destination Leaders and not Destination Managers.  Last week I was reminded that you wrote the book on Destination Leadership.”

- Dan Rowe, CEO Panama City Beach CVB

“I wish I ‘d known about this book before taking the reins at Visit Detroit.”

- Claude Mollinari, CEO of Visit Detroit

“I certainly had my highlighter out when I read your book.”

- Katie Guasco, CMO of Visit the Northshore

“I've been loaning my copy out to staff, but they never want to give it back! I’m ordering more to give to key Board members.”

- Gary Sherwin, CEO Visit Newport Beach

“My copy is now highlighted and earmarked and has annotations of my thoughts in the margins. Really enjoyed it and the conversational tone you used to move through the topics.”

- Catherine Callary, VP of Destination Development at Ottawa Tourism
