Colorado…Again
The State of Colorado is infamous in destination marketing circles for slashing tourism marketing in the early 90s and then watching its visitor economy crater. So, it was pretty fascinating to watch legislators there shift State laws regarding the use of local hotel taxes from marketing and development to housing and daycare a few years ago.
Most States posted fairly robust tourism gains in 2024. Colorado tourism spending rose only 0.3%.
It couldn't be because a number of local Destination Marketing Organizations had their budgets gutted, could it?
It's a consequence that our leaders should have been smart enough to recognize.
